Algarve Coast, Portugal

We arrived early this morning and anchored off the Algarve Coast near Portimao. Since couldn’t dock at the port, tenders took us in to shore where we were met by our tour buses.

The Algarve is a region that looks out on the Atlantic Coast to the south and west and to mountains in the north and east which separate it from Spain. It has lovely beaches, high cliffs, and plenty of sunshine which has transformed it from a coast dotted with little fishing villages to one of Portugal’s leading tourist destinations. Condos and apartments are everywhere, and they are building more.

We first went to Lagos, a town that is partially surrounded by 14th Century walls. The main square is lined with cafes where people meet for morning caffe and gossip

Even the Lagos dogs greet each other with a kiss…or at least a sniff

A city market is near where fresh fish is sold daily. I am sorry that I didn’t get to enjoy the tasty sardines.

The Portuguese are renowned for their tile work. Old tiled-covered buildings still survive.

From here, we drove to the craggy coastline of the Ponta da Piedade. The Romans thought this was the end of the earth. This rock has seen a lot of sailors go…and not come back.

The rugged cliffs overlooking the sea here contain numerous grottoes.

Kayakers and sailors skim along by the rock formations.

And through one of the cave openings, I saw our ship waiting for our return . Can you see it too? (Look in upper left).

This was just a glimpse of pretty Portugal. We are now on our way to Spain.
